From the Thursday, October 22, 1925 Hawarden Independent:

DEATH CLAIMS HENRY WALROD

PASSED AWAY MONDAY MORNING AT AGE OF 90 YEARS

Death Occurred at the Home of His Daughter, Mrs. Joe Bray, After Illness of Four Weeks

J. H. Walrod, for many years a resident of this community, passed away at 7 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joe Bray, in this city, following an immediate illness of three or four weeks duration. Seven years ago Mr. Walrod suffered a paralytic stroke and shortly afterwards, with his wife, moved to Sioux City. Mr. and Mrs. Walrod came to Hawarden four weeks ago on a visit and Mr. Walrod became ill after being here only three days. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bray Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. T. Parker, pastor of the Baptist church. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

John Henry Walrod celebrated his 90th birthday on the 12th day of last July so that the span of his life far surpassed that accorded to the average man. Ho was born in Erie county, Pa., in 1835 and his early childhood was spent there. He came to Iowa with his parents two years before this state was admitted to the union, the family locating in Clinton county when he was a lad of only nine years. He grew to manhood there and in 1880 was united in marriage with Rachel Murphey to which two sons and two daughters were born.

The family moved to Beresford, S. D., in 1888 where they resided for twelve years and then moved to Hawarden. Mr. and Mrs. Walrod made their home here for eighteen years and moved to Sioux City seven years ago where they have since resided.

Ail four of his children, with the aged wife, remain to mourn his departure from this life. The children are Mrs. Joe Bray of Hawarden, Mrs. Laura Recknagel of Sioux City, Harry Walrod of Sioux City and Earl Walrod of Correctionville. Earl Walrod is at present ill in a hospital at Battle Creek, Iowa, and was unable to be present at the funeral.

Poster's note: According to the 1925 Iowa census, Mr. Walrod was the son of Mary Greenman and David Walrod.
