From the Thursday, May 15, 1969 Hawarden Independent:

Funeral services for Ervin E. Johnson, 44, were held Tuesday, May 6, at 2:00 p. m, in St. Paul's Lutheran church at Ireton with Rev. A. W. Anacker officiating. A prayer service was held the evening before at the Dow Funeral Home in Ireton. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Casket bearers were Alwin Eilts, Marvin Schmidt, Fred Westergard, Leonard Halweg, Robert Eilers, and Elmer Asslen. Honorary bearers were Carl Braaks, Louis Braaks, Edwin Winterfeld, Raymond Rohlfs, and Kenyon Karr.

St. Paul's quartet sang at the memorial service, accompanied by Mrs. Vernon Eilts at the organ.

Mr. Johnson died Saturday, May 3, in a Sioux City hospital. He had suffered a heart attack the previous Tuesday and was taken to the Hawarden Community hospital from where he was later transferred to Sioux City.

He was born May 29, 1924, at Craig. He married Marjorie Houlton on December 1, 1946, at Ireton. He farmed in the Ireton community and was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Ireton, serving on the church board and taking part in church activities.

Survivors include the widow; four sons, Paul, a senior at West Sioux high school, Dick, who will enter high school next year, Bob, in grade school, and Tommy, two years old; three daughters, Margene and Linda, both in college, and Pam, who will start kindergarten next fall; one brother, George of Ireton, and four sisters, Mrs. Verna Hartman of Richmond, California, Mrs. Anna Bartlett of Centerville, South Dakota, Mrs. Marie Kluter of Chester, South Dakota, and Mrs. Tillie Kelly of Sioux City.

Poster's note: During World War II, Erv was a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine and saw extensive duty on assignment to the U.S. Coast Guard escorting ships overseas. He was the son of Sharlotte (Lottie) Junkermeier and Charles G.
