Hawarden Independent July 26, 1928

Ireton friends received word of the death of Mrs. E.H. Vande Braak of Akron, formerly of this vicinity, who passed away at her home last Friday night following a brief illness from cancer of the bladder. Her husband, the late E.H. Vande Braak, preceded his wife in death just two months.

Henrietta H. Vande Braak was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Feb. 24, 1856, and departed this life July 20, 1928, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 26 days. She was reared and educated in the country of her birth and came to America's shores in 1880 with a sister who still survives her and at present lives at Holland, Mich. The same year she came to America she was united in marriage with Evert H. Vande Braak at Orange City. The couple made their home on various farms in and around towns of Sioux Center, Maurice, LeMars and Ireton. In 1905 their dreams were realized when they were able to own their own farm home near Akron. Six children were born to this union, two daughters having preceded their mother in death. The surviving children are Evert of Akron; John of Westfield; Anna, Mrs. John Faber of Conrad, Mont; Minnie, Mrs. Fred Barnhart of Farmingdale S.D. She also leaves one adopted son, Jacob Luikens of Norfolk, Neb., eleven grandchildren and four children of her adopted son to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, neighbor and friend.

The deceased was a woman of noble integrity and Christian character. Her life long interest was in her home, husband and children. Her heart was always open to the homeless and motherless of the world. For many months following the death of their mother, the Luiken children found refuge in the Vande Braak home and later they adopted the youngest child of this family. Mrs. Vande Braak was an earnest Christian and when the church of her affiliation was not at hand she united with the Methodist church of Akron. Her greated joy was her Bible and one of her requests was that it be buried with her.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church at Akron with Rev. Wilson H. Gow, the pastor in charge, and Rev. D.C. Davis, pastor of the Christian Church, assisting. The remains were tenderly laid to rest beside her life long companion in the beautiful Akron cemetery.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. John Faber and children of Conrad, Mont.; Mrs. Fred Barnhart and sons of Farmingdale, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. John Roghair of Orange City and Mr. and Mrs. Gale Bergsma of Ireton.
