Hawarden Independent February 16, 1933

John Turner, a long time resident of this community passed away at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Hawarden hospital. Mr. Turner had been a sufferer from diabetes for many years and had been failing steadily the past few months. Recently he suffered an attack of influenza which hastened his death. He was removed from his home to the Hawarden hospital Sunday evening.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Hawarden at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with rev. Robt. H. Forrester in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery.

John Turner was born at Liverpool, England, Feb. 17, 1854, so lacked but two days of being 79 years of age at the time of his death. At the age of 2 years he came to America with his parents and they settled in Lewis county, Mo. He was the oldest of a family of four children. He continued to reside in Missouri until he was united in marriage with Anna L. Dick on Jan. 31, 1878. After their marriage they moved to Nebraska where they lived for several years, coming to Iowa about forty years ago at which time they bought a farm, eight miles southeast of Hawarden, where he continued to reside until his death. Mrs. Turner preceded him in death about 21 years ago.

Three sons and one daughter were born to Mr. & Mrs. Turner. One son Edgar Turner, died about 7 years ago. The surviving children are J.S. Turner and J.R. Turner, both of Artesian, S.D. and Mrs. W.T. Rembe of Hawarden. They also took a girl from orphans' home whom they raised. She now Mrs. Hazel Hill and resides at Arvada, Wyo. Mr. Turner is survived by one brother.

Mr. Turner was a man who was highly esteemed by those who enjoyed his acquaintance. He was a man of honor and integrity and enjoyed the confidence of all with whom he had dealings. He was a loving husband and a kind father and will be greatly missed by his children and a host of friends.
