From the Hawarden Independent, May 27, 1937:

Sudden Death of Small Child

This community was greatly shocked when it was learned that little Joel Herman Dierks, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dierks, died suddenly between 8 and 9 o'clock last Friday night, May 21st, from heart failure. His mother had put him to bed and shortly after when she went to look after his needs she discovered that he had passed away.

Joel Herman Dierks was born Feb. 15, 1937, and so was but 3 months and 16 days old at the time of his death. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Mary Ann, aged 3 years, and a number of other relatives. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family in their bereavement.

Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 Monday afternoon and from the Peace Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. Rev. Hugo Beyer preached a fine sermon.

Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mrs. Mary Dierks, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dierks and son, Mrs. Paul Dierks and Thomas Theissen of Gladbrook, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Theissen and daughter and Mrs. Mary Frahm of Gaza, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Theiseen, Mrs. Viola Peters and daughter Elaine and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Theissen of Lake Park, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Theissen of Spirit Lake.
