David W. De Jong

September 27, 1962 - June 4, 2013
Mr. David De Jong, age 50, of rural Hospers, was suddenly taken to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, in a traffic accident south of Hospers.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 8, at 10:30am, at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Todd De Rooy will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

David Wayne was born on September 27, 1962, in Sheldon, the fourth child born to Franklin and Wyllean (Wildeman) De Jong. He was raised in rural Hospers. He attended the Hospers Christian School. He graduated from Unity Christian High School in Orange City.

On August 6, 1983, he married Barbara Lee Dering in South Holland, Illinois. They made their first home by Newkirk and later moved to the “home place” south of Hospers. They were blessed with four sons.

In earlier years, David helped bale hay and do chores for area farmers. He later was employed by Bandstra Furs in Sioux Center and then Demco Manufacturing in Boyden. He was currently farming with his brothers.

He was baptized and made profession of his faith in the Hospers Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a Cadet counselor and Young People sponsor. He was currently a member of the Redeemer United Reformed Church. He served as a deacon in both churches. He also had been a member of the Hospers Christian School board of trustees.

Dave enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood, planting trees, and woodworking, especially with his sons. What he built was sturdy, made to last. He had a gift for fixing and figuring out how to make things. He was a wonderful father and husband, son and brother, known for his strength, kindness, integrity, patience and love. His loved ones will miss his dry humor and ability to tell a story.

Survivors include his wife of nearly thirty years, Barb; four sons, Daniel David De Jong, age 25, of Hospers; Luke Lee De Jong, age 22, of Salix; and Caleb Joel De Jong, age 20, and Seth Andrew De Jong, age 15, both at home; his parents, Frank and Wyllean De Jong of Hospers; a sister and her husband, Connie and Gordon Zonnefeld; and two brothers and their wives, Robert and Carla De Jong, and Daryl and Lori De Jong, all of Sheldon; two brothers-in-law, Gary Dering, and his wife, Zoey, of Gig Harbor, Washington; and Robert Beasley, of Duncan, Oklahoma; fifteen nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife’s parents, Henry and Joyce Dering; a sister-in-law, Margaret Beasley; and both sets of grandparents.

Memorials will be directed to Christian education and missions
