RAYMOND KIEL

Mr. Raymond Kiel, age 75, of Fullerton, California, formerly of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at his residence.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, July 3, at 11:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. Dennis Hietbrink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday, at 10:00am, at the church. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Raymond was born on February 21, 1933, at Maurice, the son of John and Marie (Huisman) Kiel. He was raised on a farm between Orange City and Maurice. He received his education at the Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City, Morningside College in Sioux City, and the San Diego State University in California, where he earned his Masters' degree.

On October 9, 1953, he married Edna Joyce Vander Maten in Newkirk. He then served in the United States Army for two years. They made their home in Orange City, Sioux City, and California, where he was a high school math teacher. He then became employed by North American Rockwell, where he worked on Apollo and the space shuttle. Later, he returned to teaching and tutored and home schooled many terminally ill and recovering students. In 2002, he retired, and then they spent their summers in Iowa.

Mr. Kiel was currently a member of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Wherever they lived, he was active in a church, often serving as a deacon or an elder and teaching Sunday school classes. He had a deep love for his family, extended family, and friends.

Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years; two sons and their wives, Loren and Glennis Kiel, of Bellflower, California; and Jason and Sue Kiel, of Orange, California; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Kiel, and his wife, Brittney, of Bellflower; Stephanie Kiel, of Ankara, Turkey; and Natalie Kiel, of Azusa, California.

Ray also had ten siblings and their spouses, (Steve and Henrietta Kiel, now deceased); Hilda and Dick Addink, of Sioux Center; Hermina (and Steven, now deceased) Hulstein, of Hull; (Kathryn and Arend Wassink, now deceased); Bill and Joan Kiel, of Hartley; Mary and Hank Addink, of Orange City; Howard and Grada (and Marie, now deceased) Kiel, of Sioux Center; Clarence and Myrtle Kiel, of Orange City; Evelyn (and Orville, now deceased) Kroeze, of Orange City; and Vernon and Geri Kiel, of Alton.
