Death: Feb. 26, 1918
Hospers Sioux County Iowa, USA

A saddening event occurred here on Tuesday, Feb. 26 [*1918] when Arie DeVries passed away at his home from the effects of pneumonia after being sick for only four days. He had passed his three score years and ten, being 73 years and 26 days of age at the time of his death.

The deceased came to America when a small boy, having crossed the ocean from North Holland, where he was born. Sioux county has been his home for many years. He was married to Miss Mary Vander Linden and fifteen children were born to them, of whom nine died while still small. The remaining six survive their parents.

The funeral will be held this Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the house and at 1:30 from the Presbyterian church and will be in charge of Rev. Dykstra of Hospers, and Rev. McMillan of Sioux City. Interment will take place at the Hospers cemetery. he was blessed with a gentle heart and kind nature as evidenced by his multitude of warm friends among the children.

Mr DeVries was a janitor of the public school for a number of years and a beautiful wreath of flowers was presented by the teachers in memoriam and many other bouquets from friends have been sent to the residence.

The children are John DeVries of Newkirk; Mrs. Wm Te Grootenhuis of Hospers; Mrs. Frank DeKok, east of Hospers; Fred at home; Neal, who is stationed agent at Carnes and a daughter living at Firth, Neb.
