Mrs. Jacob Van Houte, Sr.

Mrs. Jacob Van Houte, aged 87, one of Boyden's pioneer residents, died at her home on Friday evening following an illness of only a week.

Mrs. Van Houte, nee Johanna Schuitemaker, was born in Nyverdal, Netherlands, on May 9,1852, a daughter of Gerrit and Wilhelmina Schuitemaker. Rev. and Mrs. Van Houte and children came to the United States fifty-five years ago, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. They then located in Grand Rapids. Michigan, three years, and later spent eight years in Holland, Michigan, and six years in South Holland, Illinois. The Van Houte family then moved to Boyden where Rev. and Mrs. Van Houte served the First Reformed church for thirteen years.

Mrs. Van Houte was a Boyden resident for thirty-six years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Those who preceded her in death were her husband, Rev.Van Houte, who died Oct. 19, 1919, and three daughters, Theodora, who died March 1898, Elizabeth in infancy, and Wilhelmina, June 4, 1939, and a son William, May 21, 1906.

Surviving her are five sons, Gerrit of Newberry, California, John of Sheridan, Wyo., Marius of Santa Rosa, California, and Henry and Jacob of Boyden; and two daughters: Janet of San Marino, California, and Mrs. Henry Rensink of Boyden; and
fourteen grandchildren, and eleven greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan, 15, 1940, at one o'clock in the afternoon at the residence, and at 1:30 o'clock at the First Reformed church. The Rev. Mr. J. W. Brink conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Jacob Brouwer of Orange City. Interment was made at the Boyden cemetery. The Sioux Center Burial Association had charge of the funeral arrangements.
