August 29, 1927 - May 1, 2013

Mrs. Shirley Wielenga, age 85, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, May 6, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Shirley Jeane was born on August 29, 1927, in Wichita, Kansas. She was the daughter of Hubert and Marie (Mouw) De Jong. She was raised at Newkirk, where she attended school.

On June 15, 1946, she married Henry Wielenga in Mineral Wells, Texas. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. She also served as a nurses’ aide at the Orange City Municipal Hospital and worked in the production department of Harkers, Inc., in Orange City. In March of 2011, she became a resident of the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. Henry passed away on February 15, 2013, in Orange City, after more than 67 years of marriage.

Mrs. Wielenga was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in Bible studies. She volunteered at the Sioux County Hospice and was a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post Auxiliary in Orange City.

She enjoyed painting, playing organ, reading, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include five children, Arlan Wielenga, and his wife, Cindy (Simmons), of Seattle, Washington; Sharyl Schuller, of Orange City; Larry Wielenga, and his wife, Mary Ann (Brunk), of Sioux Center; Daryl Wielenga, and his wife, Lenyce (Te Grotenhuis), of Orange City; and Brian Wielenga, and his wife, Janice (Ream), of Sheldon; ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lois De Beer, Kathleen, and her husband, Peter Van Wyk, and Delores, and her husband, Henry Kramer; three brothers-in-law, Verne Wielenga, and his wife, Myrna, Donald Wielenga, and his wife, Janice, and Lawrence “Laurie” Wielenga, all of Orange City; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Wielenga, of Santa Maria, California.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Helen Rae; a sister, June De Jong; a brother, Erwin De Jong; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence Wielenga and Enno Wielenga; two sisters-in-law, Marie, and her husband, George Kuik; and Bernice, and her husband, Alfred Wassenaar; a brother-in-law, Fred De Beer, and a sister-in-law, Janet Wielenga.
