Hawarden Independent, December 13, 1928 (shortened obit, leaving out the history of early pioneer life)

J. C. Bonney, one of the very earliest pioneers of Union county, passed away at his home several miles southwest of Hawarden, early last Friday morning. His last illness of about two weeks duration was caused by heart trouble, developing into pneumonia, which terminated a life of many years of ill health.

Funeral services wee held at the home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon and at the Big Springs church at 2:30 with Rev. H. L. Carlton, the pastor, in charge. The large church was filled to capacity with relatives and friends who had come to pay their last respects to the memory of the departed. Interment was made in the Big Springs cemetery and he was laid to rest beneath a mound of flowers such as he loved and cherished all his life.

John Clarence Bonney was born at Emmet, Calhoun county, Mich, Oct. 18, 1857, and died Dec. 7, 1928, being at the time of his death 71 years, 1 month and 19 days of age. In 1862, when a mere boy, he came west with his parents to explore this vast unsettled farming region. Sioux City at that time was but little more than a village. He was united with Mrs. Nancy Wakeman, July 21, 1880. He became a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church in March, 1901, retaining his membership until his death.

He leaves to mourn his departure his devoted wife, one step-daughter Mrs. D. K. Bennett of Chatsworth, six step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren. He also leaves four brothers, George, David, Frank and Will, a host of other relatives and a large circle of friends.

Omitting a very long list of friends and relatives.
