Hawarden Independent, October 11, 1934 (Shortened obit)

Mrs. Nancy M. Bonney, a resident of the Big Sioux valley for 68 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. K. Bennett, in Chatsworth, Saturday morning after a prolonged illness.

Funeral services were held at the Big Springs Baptist church, Monday afternoon with Rev. B. L. Carlton, former pastor, in charge. Interment was made in the Big Springs cemetery.

Nancy M. Blake was born at Cross River, Westchester County, N.Y., Nov. 5, 1848, and died at Chatsworth, Oct. 6, 1934, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 1 day. She grew to young womanhood in New York where she was united in marriage to Lester Wakeman. One daughter was born to this union. In 1866, they came west and settled on a farm, five miles north of Akron, where they suffered all the hardships of pioneer life. In 1880 she was married to J. C. Bonney and moved to their farm in Big Springs township where she lived for 49 years. After the death of her husband six years ago she purchased a home in Chatsworth in order to be near her daughter. Last January her always sturdy health failed her and as she did not wish to leave her own home, her daughter, Mrs. D. K. Bennett, went to live with her to care for her, while her granddaughter, Mrs. Geo. Van Allen of Watertown, SD, came to help her father in his task of caring for the two homes. All that these three people could do to make an old person's last days comfortable and happy, was graciously and tenderly done. Six weeks previous to her death she was moved to her daughter's home, as Mrs. Van Allen was obliged to return to Watertown, and there she lived out the remaining days of her long life, tenderly cared for by Mr. & Mrs. Bennett. Besides her daughter she is survived by six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Wm. Duncan and brother, C. H. Blake, both of Danbury, Conn.; two nieces, Mrs. Charles Marshall of Hudson and Mrs. Fred Finnie of Hawarden and a host of friends.

Elinating a very long list of our to town relatives and friends, and some history of her living conditions of her pioneer life.
