Former Nieuwsblad Editor Dies

C. H. Vander Meulen, former editor of the Nieuwsblad, first Sioux Center newspaper, died at his home in Pella last month, Feb. 11 at the age of 82 years.

Born in Holland, his parents died when he was a small boy and he was raised in an orphanage at Neerbosch, Netherlands, where he remained until he was 19 years old. He emigrated to the U.S.A., coming to Sioux Center in 1891 where he helped establish the Sioux Center Nieuwsblad. In 1919 he moved to Pella to enable his children to attend Central college. He became associated with the Pella Weekblad and continued with it until it ceased publication in 1942. He then associated his activities with the Pella Chronicle, compiling the list of yearly deaths and those reaching the age of 89.

Surviving him are his widow and three children, H. C. Vander Meulen, MD, of Pella, Myrtle Vander Meulen, R.N. of Detroit, Michigan and C. R. Vander Meulen, E.S. Ch. E. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
