HENRY HERTER DIE TUESDAY
DEATH FOLLOWS STROKE THAT HE SUFFERED JAN. 14TH
Was 75 Years of Age and Lived Here Almost 50 Years.—Leaves Widow and Two Daughters
Henry M. Herter, pioneer Hawarden resident, passed away at his home in this city at 7 o'clock Tuesday morning following a stroke which he suffered on January 14th. Mr. Herter had been in gradually failing health for the past two or three years but had been able to be about town until the day he suffered the stroke. Following the stroke his condition was regarded as critical and he became gradually weaker until the end came.
Funeral services will "be held at the Associated church at 2:30 this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robt. H. Forrester, pastor of the Methodist church, and interment will be -made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Henry M. Herter was born at Huntington, Ind., Jan. 10, 1859, so was just past 75 years of age when death claimed him. At the age of 6 years he came to Victor, Iowa, and grew to young manhood at Deep River, Iowa. On Dec. 4, 1883, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Schmidt at Montezuma, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Herter celebrated their golden wedding anniversary only last month. They came to Hawarden in 1884, arriving here on May 10th of that year and their home has ever since continued to be in this city. In fact, they have lived in the same house in Hawarden during all these years but have added to it and improved it from time to time. Mr. Herter was 'a mason by trade and had a part in the construction of scores of the early day homes and business buildings of this community. He continued .at work at this trade until the past few years when declining Health compelled him to give up active work.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Herter. The eldest, Hiram J. Herter, passed away about thirty years ago at the age of 18 years. Two daughters, with the widow, are left to mourn the passing of a husband and father who was ever kind and considerate of the welfare of his loved ones. The daughters arc Mrs. F. H. Edminster of LeMars and Mrs. Harry Dawson of Hawarden. He is also survived by four brothers and three „ sisters, Theodore Herter and Mrs. Lydia Grouse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Fred Herter of Deep River, Iowa; Will Herter and Mrs. Al. Smith of Montezuma, Iowa; Chas. Herter of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Mrs. Emerson Sinclair of Sioux City.
Mr. Herter was a member of the Congregational church and was also affiliated with the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Woodmen of the World fraternal organizations. During the early lays of Hawarden he took an active part in local civic affairs and was influential in the upbuilding of the town and community. He was a master workman at the mason trade and enjoyed the friendship and esteem of a •wide circle of friends who join in extending sincere sympathy to the members of his family.
