Geraldine Oostra
Gerritdena (Geraldine) Oostra, 88 of Sioux Center died Friday, October 26, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
Funeral service was Monday at 2:30 at the Bethel Christian Reformed church of Sioux Center with the Rev. John Hilbelink and the Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating. Interment was in Hope Cemetery of Hull.
Mrs. Oostra was born in Hellendoorn, Overijssel, the Netherlands on July 4, 1919. She immigrated to the United States with her parents Gerrit Willem and Fredrika Roelofs Niezink on Dec 21, 1920, aboard the SS Ryndam from the Port of Rotterdam. Upon their arrival, the Niezink family settled in Northwest IA. She was raised in the Matlock, Hull and Sioux Center areas. On August 27, 1940 she married Richard Oostra at her parents home east of Sioux Center. They made their home in Sioux Center. She worked as a clerk at Sam's Variety in downtown Sioux Center for 17 years.
She was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center where she participated
in women's ministries over the years. She was well known for the wonderful crocheted items she created. Dollies and blankets for her children and grandchildren were her specialty.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 67 years, Richard Oostra of Sioux Center; her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and the Rev. John R. Hilbelink of Portland, Maine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Twila Oostra of Sioux Falls and Dr. Randy and Barb Oostra of Holland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law,
Bernard and Marge Niezink of Hudsonville, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Johanna and Henry Vis; an infant son; and an infant great-grandchild.
