Mr. Arthur Vander Pol, age 83, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, August 18, at 10:30am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery.

Arthur Jean was born on April 21, 1929, in Orange City, the son of Harry and Johanna (Oolbekkink) Vander Pol. He was raised on a farm north of Newkirk, where he graduated from the Consolidated High School.

On June 30, 1948, he married Arlene Nellie Hofmeyer in Newkirk. They farmed at Newkirk until 2002, when they moved to Orange City. He also worked in the maintenance department of Northwestern College in Orange City for sixteen years. In July of this year, he became a resident of Happy Siesta.

Mr. Vander Pol was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon and the Sunday school superintendent. He did volunteer mission work for twenty years.

He was also a member of the boards of directors of the Alton Farmers Cooperative, the Farm Bureau, and the Sioux County Chapter of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

"Art" enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, traveling, and especially woodworking, including making furniture and doing wood carving. He also liked attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sport events.

Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years; two sons and their wives, Lyle and Karen Vander Pol and Harold "Harry" and Lora Vander Pol, all of Hospers; a daughter and her husband, Roberta and Mark Brightman, of Earlham; a son-in-law, Lance Klein, of Frisco, Texas; eleven grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah) Vander Pol, Matthew (Terri) Vander Pol, Kelly (Jonas) Kaminskas, Brooke (Adam) Brinkmeier, Brittney (Dave) Meyer, Kristin (Josh) Christenson, Travis Klein, Taylor Klein, Arianna Brightman, Marina Brightman, and Malachi "Mack" Brightman; eight great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harvey E. and Carol Vander Pol, of Orange City; and several nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jewel Klein; a sister and her husband, Gertrude and Frank M. De Graaf; and a nephew, Harvey D. Vander Pol.
