C. Van Beek came from Putten, Gelderland a province of Holland at the age of 5 years. He lived in Fillmore County, Minn, for three years, and came to Sioux County in 1871 in a covered wagon oxen driven. His first house was a sod house a half mile east of the old town.

At the age of 23 he married Jacob Hoeven, and to this union nine children were born. They had two pairs of twins, the first pair dying in infancy.

He farmed the place one mile north a half mile east of town and all the children attended school a half mile east of the farm place. Teachers in this school were Mrs. A. TePaske, John Boeyink, Gerrtt De Mots, and Johanna Reimersma.

Gilbert now farms near Carmel and he has three sons all married. Gert, Mrs. Geo. M. Vande Brake loved on a farm near Maurice and now is in town and she has four daughters and a son. Two daughters are married.

Grace, Mrs. Nick Mouw, used to farm near Sibley. She passed away two years ago. She has one son married.

Andrew graduated from the local public school attended the university of Iowa seven years, and is a chemical engineer. At present he is the assistant manager for the Hercules Powder Co at Radford, Virginia. This plant is operating for the government program. He is married and has one son.
