Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- Leo L. Anderson, 80, of Hawarden died Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial of the cremated remains with military honors will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home of Hawarden is assisting the family. The family prefers memorials be given to PET project (personal energy transportation) in care of the United Methodist Church.
Leo L. Anderson was born April 4, 1932 in Union County, South Dakota, the son of Clarence and Mabel (Smith) Anderson. He attended school near Hudson and Beresford, South Dakota and graduated from Alcester, South Dakota High School in 1950. He attended the Boyles College of Telegraphy in Omaha and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952-1954 during the Korean War.
Leo married Patricia Duncan on March 26, 1954 at Beresford. He worked as a shoe maker until 1958 at which time he began his maintenance career with the United States Post Office until he retired in 1988.
Leo was a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the Hawarden American Legion Twin Oaks Post #254, and the Hawarden United Methodist Church. He helped start the Thunder Valley Rifle Club, West Sioux Sportsmans Club and was instrumental in building the Leo L. Anderson Softball Complex, the new United Methodist Church and the PET (Personal Energy Transportation) Project in Hawarden. He served 12 years on the Hawarden Library Board and was the Hawarden Citizen of the Year in 1991. Leo enjoyed competitive shooting, working with stained glass, woodworking, attending the mens world fast pitch softball tournaments, and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his wife Pat; four children, Wayne and friend Dee Perry of Oakdale, Minnesota, Glenda Ditter and husband Dale of Baxter, Minnesota, Curt and wife Lycia and Marlin and wife Deann all of Hawarden; a special cousin, Ida Anderson of Valentine, Nebraska; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
