FORMER HAWARDEN.MAN DIED AT HOME IN INWOOD

Was Born, in Norway. but Came to Iowa 45 Years Ago. Survived by Wife and Nine Children .

Chris. Leivestad, former well known Hawarden resident, died at his home Saturday morning from heart trouble. Although he had been in filing health for some time his death came quite suddenly.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Bethlehem Lutheran church at Inwood with Rev. Benson of Fairview, SD in charge. Burial was at Inwood.

Christian Leivestad was born at Fana Norway Aug. 10 1868, so lacked but two or three weeks of being 68 years of age at the time of his death. He grew to manhood in Norway and in his 20th year, in October , 1887 was untied in marriage with Johannah Samdal. In 1891 they came to America and for a time made their home at Oesian, Iowa. Here in the land of his adoption he spent a life full of hard work but never lost his interest and appreciation of the joys of life his family, his reading and love of good music.

His work carried him westward across the state of Iowa to Calmar, Emmetsburg, Hawarden and finally to Inwood. He was a tinner and plumber by trade and during his residence in Hawarden was employed in the Wilkinson & Henkels hardware store. After moving to Inwood in 1912 he engaged in business for himself and continued. to reside there until his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, five daughters, four sons and ten grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Richard Younie and Mrs. Will Gregg of Hawarden; Mrs. Clifford near, Chamberain SD. Mrs. Scott Jones and Mrs. Wm. Garnder, Tacoma WA, Henry Leivestad of Madison WI; Arthur Leivestad of Oklahoma City, Christian Leivestad of Seattle WA, and Olaf Leivestad of Inwood. One son died in early youth. Though scattered east and west, each son and daughter on hearing of their father’s failing health two months ago was able to come to that time and visit him.
On brother, Rasmus Leivestad, lives at Nrothfield MN, on sister, Ragnild Sjoboen of Olympia WA. These, with two sisters in Norway are left from a family of eight.
