Mary Alice Hinde Eldredge was born at Durango, Dubuque county, Iowa May 3, 1870, to Richard and Martha Hinde. She came in a covered wagon to Sioux county with the family in 1882. She attended the home school, later attending school in Dubuque County. She attended college at Vermillion, SD., and after her schooling, she later took a course in dressmaking and tailoring. She was in great demand as a dressmaker and made many beautiful wedding outfits, as she loved to sew. She kept house for her father and brothers for a number of years, as her mother passed away sometime before.

She was married to Ira E. Eldredge and came to make her home in Rock Valley Nov. 29, 1917, where she had since resided. Mr. Eldredge passed away March 24, 1943 Mrs. Eldrege became suddenly ill on Monday, Nov 8th . She never regained consciousness and passed away quietly Tuesday, Nov 9, at the age 84 years, 6 months and 6 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing her grandson, Robert Thornburg, his wife Lucretia Thornburg and their two children, Robert and Julia Thornburg; her stepson Rolland Eldredge ; her two brothers and their families, Thomas Hinde of Forrestburg, SD., and Edwin Hinde of Haxrun, Colo. And one sister, Mrs. Jane Mac Arthur of Le mars; besides many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends

Mrs. Eldredge joined the Presbyterian Church in Le Mars, Iowa, in 1895. She later transferred her membership to the Methodist church here. Her ardent and tireless work for the Red Cross and other societies were her great pleasure, and flowers and gardening were probably her greatest hobby and enjoyment. She entered all the flower shows and won many ribbons. She was one of the first members of the Rock Valley Woman’s club and was active in it many years. She was accepted in the Eastern Star Lodge in June 18 1918 and was past Worthy Matron, as well as having held many other offices in that lodge

Funeral services were held on Friday at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church with Dr. N.A. Price officiating. Interment was in the Family plot in Le Mars cemetery .
