The Alton Democrat of Jun 22, 1901 had a death notice (from the LeMars Globe) on a John Earl, but from all the evidence found on this death it was Ezra 'Jack' Earl who died at that time.

A death notice for Ezra Jackson Earl from the Hawarden Independent of June 20 1901 is furnished below.

E. J. Earl, one of the pioneers of Sioux county, died suddenly while sitting in a chair at the home of I. C. Munson of LeMars, last Sunday morning (Jun 16, 1901) He has been a sufferer from heart trouble for some time and this was the cause of his sudden demise. He drove to LeMars Friday in company with his daughter, Mrs. Edward Ellis, to be examined by a doctor in order to send an application to Washington for an increase of his pension, as he was a veteran of the Civil war. On Saturday he went to Sioux city and had another examination under an xrays. He was told that while his life seemed to be hanging by a mere thread he might live a number of years by taking good care of himself.
On Sunday morning he arose and ate his breakfast at the Munson home, went out and hitched up the team for Mrs. Ellis to return home with, took a stroll about the place and returned to the house. It was a damp morning and he complained of being a little chilly and pulled an arm chair up by the stove. While sitting there he expired without a struggle, and Mr. Munson who was in the room all the time did not know that his old friend had passed away until his wife entered and startled him by saying that something was wrong with Mr. Earl. Jack Earl come to Sioux county in 1870 and has been a reisdent on the old homestead in Washington township ever since. He was about 70 years of age and leaves a daughter and several sons to mourn his death. The remains were laid to rest Tuesday in the cemetery near the old homestead by the side of those of his wife. He was well know and respected by all the residents of the country.
(He and his wife were buried in the Union Hill cemetery near the Plymouth county line south of Ireton. Ezra J. Earl 62/72 born NY died 16 Jun 1901. Margaret L. (Reece) died 20 May 1887 at 48 yrs. The 1880 census of Sioux county listes Ezra as 47 born NY, Margaret 39 born NY, children William 21 NY, Edward 17 NY, Charley 12 NY and James 7 IA.)
