Verdoorn, Frederick Norman, 1940-2007

Frederick Norman Verdoorn, 67, passed away early Friday, December 28, at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines. A memorial service was held on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 30, at Knox Church in Des Moines.

Fred was born September 10, 1940, in Orange City and grew up in Hospers. He was the only child of John and Jeanette Verdoorn. He graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City in 1962 and married Judith Post in 1963.

After living in Orange City and Columbia, Mo., they moved to Sioux City in 1968 with their three children. Fred relocated to Brookings, S.D. in 1983 to work for H&B Electric. In 1999, he moved to Des Moines to live near his oldest son Robert and family.

Fred loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and enjoyed working part-time at Sears Auto Center. He was known by his friends and family as a very kind, gentle and loyal man.

Fred is survived by three children and their spouses, Robert Verdoorn and Karen of Des Moines, Martin Verdoorn and Julie of Bentonville, Ark., and Jill Becker and Jeff of Kingsley; and 13 grandchildren, Emily, Claire, William, Thomas and Lydia Verdoorn; Colin and Jason Verdoorn; Sara, Joseph, and Lucas Turner; and Chris, Corey and Cole Becker.
