Gerrit Van Grootheest, Sr., 79, of Rock Valley died Thursday, May 5, 1988 in Hegg Memorial Hospital. Born March 18, 1909, in the Netherlands, he moved to the United States in 1920. He married Henrietta Van Beek on Jan. 19, 1934 in Rock Valley. Mr. Van Grootheest worked as a farm hand, then farmed near Fairview and later in the Doon, Iowa area. He retired to Rock Valley in 1972, and became a resident of Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley in 1985. He was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley.
Survivors include his wife; three sons: Gerrit Jr. and Albert, both of Rock Valley; and Ted, Storm Lake, Iowa; two daughters: Mrs. Arie (Betty) Den Hoed and Mrs. James (Mary) Van Surksum, both of Rock Valley; 22 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry, Rock Valley; and four sisters: Elizabeth Vlastuin and Mrs. Tom (Rikja) Van Den Top, both of Rock Valley; Geertruida Van Holland, of the Netherlands; and Effie Van De Stroet, Canton.
