Mrs. Gerrit Hoekstra, 80, passed away suddenly last Wednesday evening, January 1, at her home south of Maurice. She had been in poor health for some time, but recently had been up and about and death came unexpectedly.

Mrs. Hoekstra, nee Alice Heemstra, was born in Friesland, Netherlands on December 10, 1866. She came to America at the age of 19 years, settling at LeMars. In 1894 she was united in marriage to Gerrit Hoekstra. The family moved to Maurice in 1911, and since that time she lived in this vicinity.

Surviving are three sons: John of Slayton MN, Gradus of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, and George at home; and an adopted daughter, Marie, Mrs. Peter Hopp of Ireton. Also surviving are four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was proceeded in death by her husband on October 23, 1920 and a daughter, Julia, who died at the age of 1 ½ yrs, 2 grand children, 2 brothers, and a sister.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the First Reformed Church with Rev. J. Roggen Officiating. Burial took place in the Sherman Township Cemetery.

All of the children were home for the funeral, including Gradus Hoekstra who came by plane from Canada.
