William M. Vant Hul
ALTON, Iowa - William M. Vant Hul, 79, of Alton died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at his residence. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Alton Reformed Church in Alton, with the Revs. Kent E. Vant Hul, Elizabeth Hardeman and Michael Hardeman officiating. Burial will be in Nassau Township Cemetery.
William Morel was born Jan. 1, 1928, in Hull, Iowa, the son of Herman and Tillie (Mouw) Vant Hul. He was raised on a farm near Hull, where he attended a country school. He later received his general education diploma from Northwest Iowa Technical College in Sheldon, Iowa. On Jan. 29, 1946, he married Mildred Helen Kramer in Orange City, Iowa. They first farmed near Carnes, Iowa, then moved into Alton. After a short time in Sioux Falls, S.D., they settled in Doon, Iowa. In the early 1980s, they returned to Alton, where they have since lived. In addition to farming, he was a truck driver and he managed the fertilizer, chemical and seed divisions of both the Farmers Cooperative Elevator and American Cyanimid in Doon., Iowa. He was a member of Alton Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and on the consistory. In earlier years, he was elected as the mayor of Doon. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Doon, where he served as vice president of the consistory and as the superintendent of the Sunday School. He also belonged to the Gideons and served as a lay minister. He enjoyed traveling, reading, fishing, golfing and visiting with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Millie; five children and their spouses, Virginia "Gini" and Dr. Rodney Schuller of Le Mars, Iowa, the Rev. Kent and Wendy Vant Hul of Cedar Grove, Wis., Mark and Kathy Vant Hul of Alton, Lynne and Don Dreesen of Slayton, Minn., and Jan and Dan Plesher of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren and spouses, Dr. Matthew and Dr. Kim Schuller, Heather and Adam Nemer, Dr. Nicholas and Amy Van Es, Dr. Joseph and Heather Van Es, Eric and Susan Vant Hul, Troy and Sarah Vant Hul, Eva and Sean Bulian, Jaclyn Vant Hul, Rachae and John Jensen, Brittany Dreesen, Brandon Dreesen, Ross and Amanda Small, Luke Plesher and Olivia Plesher; 18 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Frances Van Gorp of Orange City, Iowa, Emogene and her husband, Donald Raak of Hospers, Iowa, and Dawn and her husband, Dennis Beltman of Orange City. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two children, Wayne Van Hul and Mary Van Es; and two brothers-in-law, Howard Van Gorp and Kenneth Van't Hof.
