Obituary: Rock Valley, JA: John E. Hoekstra, 91,
died Sunday, March 18, 2012 at George Good
Samaritan Center. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Thursday at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Pastor Garry Nyenhuis will be officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday with the family present 6-7:30 pm at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
John was born November 3, 1920 on the homestead near Doon, IA, son of Edward Sr. and Mary
(Brower) Hoekstra. He served in the U.S. Army (Dec. 1942-Jan. 1946) during WW II, including
the European Theater and was a cryptography and communication specialist at the Supreme
Headquarters. John married Dolores Stubbe May 16, 1946 at Rock Rapids, IA. They lived in
Rock Rapids where he was parts manager at Kooiker Chevrolet until 1968 became parts manager
at the Chevy dealership at Bellevue, NE. John began working in Rock Valley for Bunch
Insurance in 1972 and later at Valley State Bank Insurance Agency. John worked at Hudson Insurance a few years before retirement. Dolores died February 1, 2002. John moved to
Whispering Heights and later to George Good Samaritan Center.
Survivors include his two daughters, Joan Freeman of Bellevue, NE, Paula (Arvin) Altena of
Sioux Center, IA; grandchildren, Jill (Dan) Hruskocy and Rhonda (Rick) Stygstra; great-grandchildren, Megan, Daniel, Tristan, Macy, and Kierstan Hruskocy, David and Joseph Stygstra; sister-in-law, Ellen Rhode of Rapid City, SD. John was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; brother, Edward Jr. Hoekstra; sisters, Ida Van Driel, Cora DeRuyter.
