FORMER TEACHER HERE SUCCUMBS

Mrs. Lillian Maynard, 86, of Storm Lake, a former resident of Hawarden, died in a hospital last Friday evening. Graveside services were held in Grace Hill cemetery in Hawarden at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. Chester Custer of the First Methodist church officiating.

Lillian Elsie Wallace was born January 20, 1872, in Green county, Wis. She came to Hawarden as a young woman and taught in the public schools. At one time she was principal of Hawarden high school. She married Archibald Maynard of Hawarden August 24, 1904. Mr. Maynard died in 1935. She continued to live here until 1952 when she went to Storm Lake to live with her daughter, Myra Maynard.

During her life in Hawarden Mrs. Maynard was active in club, civic and church work. She still was a member of the E.M.P.E.O. chapter, Loyal chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and the Presbyterian church. She was much interested in writing and at various times wrote for the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Wallace Farmer, Des Moines Register and Sioux City Journal.

She is survived by four children, Proctor Wallace Maynard of Chicago, Miss Myra Elizabeth Maynard of Storm Lake, Archibald Wallace Maynard of Tooele, Utah, and Miss Mary Elizabeth Maynard of Cherokee; two sisters; four brothers; and seven grandchildren.
