Last Friday H. J. Wissink of Carmel died at the age of 80 years. He had been suffering for some time from different ailments brought on by old age. Mr. Wissink was one of the oldest pioneers in the county. Funeral services were held on Monday at Carmel, Rev. B. De Jong having charge of the services.

Herman Jan Wissink died at his home at Carmel Iowa on Friday May 10th 1912 at the age of 80 years 8 months and 3 days. Deceased was born in the Netherlands. He came to the United States in 1868 and located in Fillmore county, Minn. In 1872 he came to Sioux county locating on a farm in the vicinity of Sioux Center. H.J. Wissink had been married twice, his first wife passing away shortly after arriving in Sioux county. Deceased is survived by his widow, one sister who resides in The Netherlands, four sons-Manus and Jacob of Sioux Center, Herman of Carmel and Dick H. of Orange City. The following step-children survive him-H.J. Wesselink of Mapes, N.D., D.J. Wesselink, Mrs. M. Borgman, Mrs. A. Vander Stoep of Sioux Center, H.B. Wesselink of Carmel and Mrs. J.W. Mieras of Marion, S.D. The funeral services were held from the Reformed church of Carmel on Monday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. B. De Jonge. Interment was made at Carmel. many from different parts of the county attended the funeral.

On Friday May 10th, H.J. Wissink passed from this life, having almost reached the eighty-first milestone. He leaves a widow and seven sons and three daughters to mourn his demise. Those from else-where who attended the funeral services which were held in the Reformed church at Carmel were: Mr. and Mrs. Jake Mieras of Monroe, S. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Wissink of Orange City, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wissink and children of Alton.

Harmen was a Son of Marten Wissink born 1795 and Johanna Lubbers;
Harmen Jan Wissink was born Oct 10, 1831 Voorst Gelderland
Netherlands married Apr 6, 1889 Voorst, died May 10, 1912 Carmel Sioux
Iowa. His first wife was Hendrik Gerdina Wesselink born Apr 6, 1831
Gorssel, Gelderland Netherlands, died between1868-1872 Greenleafton
MN. They had the following children Marten 1859-1907, Gerritje 1860,
Hermanus 1863-1948, Herman 1863-1927, Harmina 1865, Harmen Jan 1867.
Harmen’s second wife he married on Dec 22, 1874 was Johanna Lubbers
widow of Drik Hendrik Wesselink, She was born Aug 6 1837 Aalten
Gelderland Netherlands died Jan 21 1921 Carmel Iowa. She had six
Wesselink children who were incorporated into the Wissink family of
about 6 children, plus Harmen and Johanna had two of their own
children. Dirk Wissink 1877-1958 and Jacob Wissink 1881-1951.
Johanna’s first husb was one of two pioneers who drowned in the Big
Sioux River trying to get wood. The story is relayed in the book
‘Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyke.)
