Otto Rouwenhorst, one of the early settlers of Sioux county, died at his home in Holland Township last Saturday night. His death resulted from cancer of his stomach. Mr. Rouwenhorst was born in Appledoorn, Holland and was seventy six year and three months of age at the time of his death.
He was united in marriage to Miss Christina Vander Kraats at Appledoorn, on November 8th, 1847, and they removed to this country twenty seven years ago, settling in Wisconsin, and a year later removed to Sioux county where they have since resided. Nine children were born to bless their union, eight of whom are living. Mrs. H. Mouw of Holland township, Nicholas Rouwenhorst of Boyden, Marina Rouwenhorst of Orange City, Mrs. A. M. Braskanp of this city, Mrs. F. Van Roekel of Sioux Center, Henry Rouwenhorst of Holland township, and Albert and Johanna who are still at home. These together with the sorrowing wife survive him. On November 6th, 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Rouwenhorst celebrated their golden wedding, and there were present the eight children, forty-one grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and in a few more weeks they would have celebrated their fifty-second wedding anniversary, with the home circle still unbroken, but death decreed otherwise.
Mr. Rouwenhorst was a good citizen and a good neighbor, respected and esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral was held from the First Reformed church on Orange City, Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Steffins, and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment in Orange City Cemetery.
