From the Alton Democrat of Oct 21, 1899
The Omaha section gang found the mangled remains of an unknown man, lying on the track about two and a half miles south, of Hospers, Saturday morning. The proper authorities were notified and County Attorney Van Qosterhout and Dr. De Bey of Orange City, proceeded to the scene of the tragedy. A post morteum held by the doctor revealed the fact that the skull, the thigh, back and one hip were crushed.
The only clew to, the man's identity were the initials "G, B," on his shirt, and it is supposed he was some luckless hobo who fell from the cars while stealing a ride. The man was of sandy complexion, near six feet tall and apparently between thirty-five and forty years old. The remains were interred at Hospers.

Later—We learn as we go to press that a clew to the man's identity was discovered through a pool check from the establishment of F. Fitzsimmons at
Sibley, which was found in bis pocket, Mr. Fitzsimmons says, the fellow gave his name as G.L. Powers Cedar Rapids, Communication with the authorities of that city has thus far failed to elicit any further information.
(Upon checking the 1895 census for Cedar Rapids there were quite a number of Powers living there. The man's given name could have been George. Another 'cold case'. If any one know anymore about this man please contact our page coodinator.)
