Julene Ellen was born on October 7, 1952, in Orange City, the daughter of Peter Marvin and Dorothy Mae (Douma) Karssen. She was raised at Alton until December of 1963, when her family moved to southern California. In 1970, she graduated from the Mayfair High School in Lakewood. She then attended a cosmetology school in Bellflower.
On February 13, 1971, she married Jeffrey James Haibel in Las Vegas, Nevada. They continued to live in California, where she was a legal secretary and later a secretary for the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services. She then became a medical transcriptionist for hospitals. She was one of the first to do this type of work from her home.
In 1988, Mr. and Mrs. Haibel moved to Alton, where they operated Haibel's Market. Around 1990, they returned to California. Since 1999, they have lived in Huntington Beach. In 2003, she was forced into early retirement because of declining health.
She was a former member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Bellflower. She currently attended the First Christian Church in Huntington Beach, where she was active in a Bible study group.
Julene was also a member of the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, but especially handwork, such as knitting and crocheting. Many people will remember her for the afghans they received.
