PIONEER OF SIOUX COUNTY PASSES AWAY
John C. Emery of Maurice—Civil War Veteran and Pioneer—Funeral today

John Cutler Emery, a resident of Maurice and vicinity for over 50 years, died at his home there at four o'clock Wednesday morning after an illness that had lasted for many months. The funeral will be held from his long time home this Saturday afternoon at one o'clock with burial at the Ireton cemetery where other comrades in arms of Civil War days sleep.

Mr. Emery was born at Ludlow, Vt. within 50 rods of the home of President Coolidge's father and where the president was born and raised. His parents left there when John was 12 years old, moving to Columbus, Wis., a short distance from Beaver Dam. Six years or so later the war broke out and he enlisted in the Union ranks, at the age of 18, and was discharged after arduous service, on account of disability caused by lung fever.

On February 26, 1863 he was married to Miss Ellen Atwood at Windsor, Wis., and they lived in that vicinity for five years or more, coming to Sioux County in 1872 and locating on a homestead three miles east and three miles south of Maurice. Fifteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Emery moved to Maurice, enjoying a few years of ease in their comfortable home there, well-earned after a life of toil and years of privation during pioneer days.

All of the six children are expected to arrive in time for the funeral services to be held this Saturday afternoon. They are Arthur of Hecla, S.D.; A. B. of Mitchell; John W. of Los Angeles who came four months ago to remain with his parents during his father's illness; Clarence of Willow City, N.D.; Roy of Sioux City; and Mrs. Edith Pry of 828 1/2 East Fifth St., Des Moines. One brother. Myron J. Emery, also survives. He is the youngest member of the family and lives at Hayward, Wis.

The Alton Democrat joins the many friends of the family In extending sympathy to the grieving family of this splendid man, an honorable and fearless character, whose duty to God, country and friends was ever well and faithfully performed.
