Margaret Agatha Jungers was born February 2, 1922 in O’Brien County’s Caledonia Township near Granville, Iowa to Joseph and Agatha (Faber) Niichel. Margaret was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville and attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Granville through the 8th grade. On February 5, 1940, Margaret married Jerome Jungers at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, Iowa. They lived in Hospers, Iowa while Jerome had a trucking business. In April of 1944, Jerome was called to serve in the United States Navy. Margaret stayed living in Hospers with three small children, until Jerome was discharged on November 15, 1945. In January of 1946, Margaret and Jerome moved their family to the Jungers’ Family Farm northeast of Hospers, which was purchased by Jerome’s grandfather, Dominick Jungers in 1884. In 1966, after her children were grown, Margaret became the head cook for the hot lunch program at St. Anthony’s School in Hospers and then in September of 1968, she became the head cook for the hot lunch program at St. Patrick’s School in Sheldon until her retirement in 1995. After living on the farm 61 years, Margaret and Jerome moved from the farm to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon, IA in November 17, 2007. In January of 2008, Margaret moved to the Indian Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sioux City, IA, her husband, Jerome preceded her in death on January 28, 2009 in Sioux City, Iowa. Margaret remained in the Touchstone Living Center until passing away on Thursday, January 12, 2012, reaching the age of 89 years, 11 months and 10 days.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers, the church guild and Christian Mothers before transferring her membership to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon where she was presently a member. She cooked for many wedding and funeral dinners in both St. Anthony’s and St. Patrick’s Catholic Churches. Margaret was an Eagle’s Club Auxiliary member in Sheldon and was chosen to have the title, "Mother of the Year" in 1972. Margaret liked playing Bingo and cards. She and Jerome belonged to a Pitch Club, Pinochle Club and a Horse Thief Club. She made many beautiful quilts, afghans, tie blankets, embroidered dish towels and hundreds of yarn-covered hangers for her children and grandchildren. She also attended ceramic classes where she did beautiful painting of many fine ceramic pieces. She was an accomplished cook and baker of breads, rolls, cakes, cookies and pies. She always had a large garden and preserved many quarts of fruits and vegetables. Her many flowers helped to make her home a welcome place for friends and family who were always welcome to share an excellent meal or a cup of coffee and conversation.
Margaret leaves to cherish her memory her six children, Paul Jungers of Lyons, NE; Johanna Koob of Sioux City, IA; Tom and his wife, Karin Jungers of Granville, IA; Fred and his wife, Elaine Jungers of Sheldon, IA; Terry and his wife, Carol Jungers of Hospers, IA and Mark and his wife, Sheila Jungers of Sioux City, IA; 20 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Florence and her husband, Al Fisher of Winner SD; 2 sisters-in-law, Wilma Niichel of Sheldon, IA and Eleanor Schnurr of Hospers, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Jerome; a daughter, Betty Jungers on December 1, 2004; a son-in-law, Kenneth Koob on May 25, 2006; an infant grandson, Gregory Koob on July 27, 1966, and great-granddaughter, Isabell Koob on July 27, 2011; her parents, two sisters, Doris and Wilber Hunker and Gertrude and Peter Mandis; 2 brothers, Joseph and Wilfred and Hazelle Niichel; and a brother-in-law, Edward Schnurr.
