Obituary: Rock Valley, IA: Carolyn DeKam, 93, of Rock Valley, died Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Pleasant Acres, Hull, IA. Funeral Service will be 11 am Thursday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Rev. John Engbers officiating. Burial at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Visitation will be Wednesday with the family present 6:30-8 pm Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
Carolyn was born July 22, 1918 at Carmel, Iowa, daughter of Conrad and Grace (Van Maanen) Hulstein. She graduated from Sioux Center High School. Carolyn married Marvin DeKam on February 19, 1942 at Carmel, Iowa. Together they farmed near Lester, Alvord, Rock Rapids, and then NW of Rock Valley. Marvin died February 16, 1974. Carolyn remained on the farm, worked at Hegg Memorial Hospital, and had foster children in her home. In 1983 she moved to town. Carolyn enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting blankets and hangers, traveling, fishing, bowling, playing cards, volunteered at Hope Haven, and most important to her was her church where she was in ladies aid and taught Sunday School. She moved to Pleasant Acres at Hull on December 13, 2011.
Survivors are her children, Rosalie Den Hoed-Wall of Escalon, CA, Rev. John (Carlene) DeKam of Grand Haven, MI, Gladys (Robert) Tiedeman of Sibley, IA, Phyllis (Ron) Tiedeman of Hull, IA, Mary (Harlan) Dorhout of Rock Valley, Lena (Veryl) Vollink of Hull, Diane (Jason) Scholten of Rock Valley, Conrad (Virginia) DeKam of Sioux Falls, SD; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; foster son, Bruce Postma of LeMars, IA; 3 foster grandchildren; sisters Gertrude Vonk of Sioux Center, Winerva Hulstein, of Sioux Center, Minerva (John) Vander Streek of Rock Rapids, IA, Myna Nyhoff of Sioux Center; 2 sister-in-laws, Jennie DeKam and Martina Kragt of Rock Valley; brother-in-law, John Vogel of Currie, MN.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; son-in-law, Bruce Wall; grandchildren, Joel DeKam, Christy Vollink, and Lisa Dorhout; great-grandson Mordecai Khachadourian; sisters, Mina Hulstein, Etta Baker, Emma Vogel, Viola Langfeldt; brothers, Fred and Albertus Hulstein
