Obituary: George, IA: Sam Altena, 89, of George, IA, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Sanford Rock Rapids Hospital. Memorial Service will be 11 am Friday at the First Christian Reformed Church, Hull, Iowa. Rev. Carl Klompien will be officiating. Burial will be prior at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Visitation with family 7-8:30 pm Thursday at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.
Sam was born March 9, 1922 at Ireton, Iowa, son of Henry and Effie (Broek) Altena and grew up near Rock Valley. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II in European Conflict (January 12, 1943 to January 5, 1946). Sam united in marriage to Wilma Wynia on February 18, 1948 at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The couple made their home on a farm SW of George, Iowa until retiring in 2008 to an apartment in George. Sam enjoyed farming, especially the fall harvest time. He was a member of the George American Legion and member of the First Christian Reformed Church at Hull, serving as a deacon.
Sam is survived by his wife, Wilma; son, Paul (Kathy) Altena of George, IA; daughter, Eloise 'Toni' Healy of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Chris Scott Healy, Cory (Shelly) Altena; great-granddaughter, Kinsly Altena; brothers, Dick (Winifred) Altena of Sioux Center, IA, Louis (Albertha) Altena of Rock Valley; sister, Marlene TeSlaa of Rock Valley; brother-in-law, Jim Blankespoor of Randolph, WI; sister-in-law, Marion Altena of Pipestone, MN.
Sam was preceded in death by his daughter, Lorna Altena; brothers, Dave, Bill, and Marvin Altena; sister, Julia Blankespoor.
Family prefers memorials to be given to Hope Haven
