January 13, 1921 - January 13, 2012

Mr. Eugene Van Wyk, age 91, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2012, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, January 19, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jonathan Opgenorth and the Rev. Bob Van Wyk will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.
Eugene Vernon was born on January 13, 1921, at Orange City, the son of Henry L. and Cora (Muilenburg) Van Wyk. He was raised at Orange City, where he graduated from high school and attended Northwestern Junior College.

On June 7, 1957, he married Grace Ludens in Greenleafton, Minnesota. They made their home on a farm just southwest of Orange City. In 2006, they moved to the Northshire Residence in Spencer, where she passed away on November 28 2008.

In March of 2010, "Gene" returned to Orange City, where he became a resident of the Long Term Care Facility.

Over the years, he was employed as a farmer, a professional photographer, a feed salesman, and in the maintenance department at Northwestern College.

Mr. Van Wyk was a faithful member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as an elder on the consistory and sang in the choir. He was also a Friendship Bible Study teacher and provided special music for many funeral services.

He enjoyed his time as a farmer and liked singing, photography, baking, fishing, and yard work. He looked forward to family times, especially with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his three sons and their wives, Bob and Barb Van Wyk, of Francistown, Botswana, South Africa; John and Dianne Van Wyk, of Orange City; and Dave and Shaini Van Wyk, of Helena, Montana; five grandchildren, Michelle, Austin, Trisha, Stephanie, and Cameron Van Wyk; a sister and her husband, Wilma and Cliff Leslie, of Orange City; and two sisters-in-law, Helena Ludens, of Orange City; and Shirley Ludens, of Hampton.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Lawrence and Dorothy Van Wyk; and three brothers-in-law, Henry Howard, John P., and Louis Ludens.
