Another of the brave boys in blue has answered to the last roll call. This time the summons came to Rufus H. Bennett, one of the old time residents of this city. Rufus H. Bennett was born in Medina county, Ohio, Juno 6th, 1840. When a boy he moved with his parents to Battle Creek, Mich , where he resided until he enlisted in Co. H, 2nd Missouri Cavalry (Merrill's horse) Feb. 12, 1864. He served until Sept. l9, 1865, when he was honorably discharged.

He returned to Michigan after the close of the war and, on the 8th of Nov., 1866, he was

Six children were born to them, four of whom are still living. The surviving children are Ira D. Bennett and Mrs Carrie A. Woods of Sioux City, Grace A. Penney of Council Bluffs, and Edith E. Bennett of Hawarden.

Mr. Bennett moved to Calliope with his family in 18?? and soon after became a member of Mansfield Post, G. A. He was a mason by trade and followed this vocation until his health failed him a few years ago. He then secured an appointment as rural mail carrier and faithfully performed the duties of this position until his recent illness. He was highly esteemed by his friends and neighbors and all will mourn his death.
