Gerrit Meyer, 90, of Sioux Center, IA died Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon.
Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11AM at the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating.
Gerrit Meyer Jr. was born March 12, 1921 to Gerrit Sr. and Hendricka (Van Voorst) Meyer and grew up near Sioux Center. He attended country school through the 8th grade.
On November 22, 1944, he was united in marriage to Anna Schuiteman at the Schuiteman family home.
Gerrit worked for the Coop Gas and Oil for one year and then began his lifetime career as a farmer and dairyman. The couple resided on their Orange City farm until 2010, when they moved to the Crown Pointe Senior Living Community in Sioux Center.
Anna passed away August 22, 2011 and soon after, Gerrit moved to the Sanford Senior Center in Sheldon. He passed away at the Sheldon Hospital.
Gerrit loved to play cards and games with family and friends. At the end of a visit he would always say "thank you for coming with a big smile on his face.
He was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Throughout his life, he served on various school boards and church councils.
Those left to cherish his memory are his six children: Gib and Ruth Meyer of Sioux Center; Harriet and Curt Ver Steeg of New Holland, SD; Viola Wylie of Chula Vista, CA; Bill and Carol Meyer of Orange City; Glenda and Tim Mulder of Orange City; Sharon and Dennis McClain of Merrill, IA along with her 20 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Gerrit is also survived by a sister-in-law, Esther Meyer of Lyndon Washington and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; his parents; three brothers: Henry and his wife, Minnie; Richard and his wife, Bertha; and Peter; and three sisters: Hilda Teunissen and her husband, Anthony; Hermina Hagens and her husband, Lambert; and Gertrude Meyer.
