J. C. Gleysteen, Attorney Dies
Partner in Law Firm, Active in Church Affairs

Jacob C. Gleysteen, 60, senior member of the law firm of Gleysteen, Harper & Sinclair, died Thursday evening [Aug. 5] in a hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian church.

Mr. Gleysteen was born June 14, 1883 in Alton, Ia. He attended Grinnell College, Grinnell, Ia. and was graduated from the University of Michigan. He completed his legal education at the University of Iowa and was admitted to the bar in 1909. He practiced in Cle Elum, Wash., until 1918, and in Sioux City until his death. He was a member and a former president of the Sioux City Bar Association and a member of the state and national bar associations.

Survivors include the widow, Henrietta A. Gleysteen; two sons, John W. Gleysteen, Sioux City, and Carl E. Gleysteen, Milwaukee; a daughter, Mrs. Alan Wicks, Juneau, Alaska; a brother, Dr. D. J. Gleysteen, Alton, Ia.; a sister, Mrs. M. Donohoe, Milford, Ia. and three grandchildren.

Mr. Gleysteen was a son-in-law of C. Hospers and a brother-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Slobe. Those who attended the funeral from Orange City were C. Hospers, Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Slobe and Miss Kathleen, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Short, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Noteboom, William Hospers, Jackson Hospers, Mrs. A. J. Vande Steeg and Miss Mae Vande Steeg. Mrs. Slobe remained with her sister Mrs. Gleysteen for a few days.

J. C. GLEYSTEEN PASSES BEYOND IN SIOUX CITY HOSP.

Alton friends were saddened to learn of the death Thursday evening of Jacob C. Gleysteen, prominent Sioux City attorney and brother of Dr. D. J. Gleysteen of Alton. He passed on in a Sioux City hospital after an illness of long duration starting some twenty years ago at which time he underwent a kidney operation. During the past few years his condition became aggravated resulting in his death at the age of 60 years.

Born in Alton June 14, 1883, his parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gleysteen and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Gleysteen were pioneer settlers and leading citizens of this community. He attended Alton public schools and Northwestern Academy at Orange City graduating with the class of 1898. He attended Grinnell College and graduated from Michigan University, completing his legal education at the University of Iowa and was admitted to the bar in 1909. He practiced law in Cle Eleum [Cle Elum], Wash., until 1918, and was senior member of the law firm of Gleysteen, Harper and Sinclair of Sioux City until his death. He was active in church affairs, having served as deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian church, was a member of Masonic bodies and the Elks Club and was a past president of the Sioux City Professional Men's Club.

He married Miss Dora Hospers of Orange City and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter: John W., Sioux City, Carl E., Milwaukee; Mrs. Alan Wicks, Juneau, Alaska; by his brother here and his sister, Sya, Mrs. M. Donohoe, Milford, Ia.; and by three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in Sioux City at the First Pres. church, with burial in Graceland Park cemetery where the Masonic ritual was conducted by Landmark Lodge.
