Jennie was born on March 23, 1904, in rural Alton, the daughter of William J. and Fannie (Vander Maaten) Van Veldhuizen. She was raised at Newkirk, where she went to a country school.
She then attended high school in Hospers, where she stayed in town during the week. After that she took a train to Pella, where she graduated from Central College. She then returned to Newkirk, where she was a teacher in their high school a few years.

Mrs. Ver Steeg was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's activities in earlier years. In later years, she worshipped through church radio broadcasts.
She enjoyed tatting, crocheting, reading, and listening to sports events on the radio. When her eyesight failed, she appreciated being able to "read" books through recordings.
