Mrs. Josephine Jacobsma, age 89, of Hospers, Iowa, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2011, at the Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, November 26, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Marvin Leese will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery.
Josephine Hilda was born on February 17, 1922, at Hospers, the daughter of John and Katherine (Hofland) Peters. She was raised on a farm near Hospers, where she attended the Christian school. She graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa. On November 25, 1942, she married Searle Howard Jacobsma in Hospers. They made their home in Hospers, Boyden, Sheldon, and Sioux City, Iowa, where she was a homemaker. "Jo" did much volunteer work for the Crossroads Prison Ministry, the Gideons, the Sioux City Gospel Mission, and the Sheldon, Iowa, Dinner Date. She was also an elementary school teacher in Hospers for four years and the activity director at the Countryside Nursing Home in Sioux City for twelve years. She was a wonderful cook and baker, the fruits of which her family enjoyed. She liked crocheting and made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Jacobsma was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. She served as a church organist for many years and was active in church women’s organizations. She was a leader of the King’s Daughters Society, a member of the Good News Bible Club, and participated in other Bible studies. She also sang with the Senior Saints for several years. In later years, she moved to the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon and in 2009, she transferred to the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Survivors include five children, Harlyn Jacobsma, and his wife, Thresa, of Orange City, Iowa; Karen, and her husband, Garald Zomermaand, of Polk City, Iowa; Daryl "Jake" Jacobsma, and his wife, Deb, of Sioux Falls; Don Jacobsma, and his wife, Suzanne, of Hinton, Iowa; and Laurie Merritt, of Sioux Falls; fourteen grandchildren, Randy Jacobsma, Stephanie Schouten, Cammy Van Vugt, Michael Jacobsma, Michelle Dorrance, Janet Haynes, Rebecca Tyrrel, Kelly Jacobsma, Kevin Jacobsma, Matt Jacobsma, Scott Jacobsma, Jennifer Jacobsma, Mitchell Merritt, and Anna Merritt; and 26 great-grandchildren. Searle passed away on August 29, 1997, in Rapid City, South Dakota, after more than 54 years of marriage. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sheryl Jo Jacobsma; a granddaughter, Katie Jacobsma; a great-grandson, Joshua Jacobsma; five sisters and their husbands, Alice and Bert Rens, Katherine and Al Walraven, Jeanette and Steve Poppema, Florence and Bill Rowenhorst, and Alvina and Martin Keuning; and two brothers and their wives, Gerrit and Ann Peters and John and Hattie Peters.Source: Oolman Funeral Homes, Hospers, IA., obit
