September 19, 1932---- October 11, 2011.
Allan G. Schafer, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011. Allan was born on September 19, 1932 in Orange City, Iowa, son of the late Harold and Florence (Mulvey) Schafer. Allen attended and graduated from Boyden High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 until 1957. On October 10, 1959, he was married to his former wife, Ardy Anderson; she preceded him in death in 2005. Allan and Ardy were married for 21 years. They moved to Cottonwood, Minnesota, where he farmed before moving to Windom, Minnesota. He then worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation as a highway bridge inspector for over 30 years. He happily retired to his farm in Minnesota, where he lived until January of 2010 when he moved to Appleton to be closer to his family. Allan was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He had a great love for his family, and will be dearly missed by all. Allan is survived by his five children, Charles (Jessica) Reed, Janelle (Dan) Berteau, Kari (Greg) Mueller, Scott (Kristi) Schafer, and Cindy (Jeff Oakley) Kirstein; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Lavonne Beyer; two nephews, one niece, and many loving friends. He was further preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gerry Beyer. The funeral service for Allan will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2011, at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2211 N. Richmond St., Appleton. Friends may call on Friday at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Allan's name may be made to your local Department of Natural Resources.
