BERT VAN'T HUL, SR.

Rock Valley: Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home and at the Christian Reformed Church for Bert Van't Hul, sr., who passed away at Pine Rest, near Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday, May 19. Mrs. Van't Hul was with him at the last, going to Grand Rapids Friday in the Vander Ploeg ambulance. She was accompanied by Bert Van't Hul and Mrs. Bert Van Maanen.

Mr. Van't Hul was born September 8, 1871 in the Netherlands. At the age of 9 he came with his parents to America, and the family settled in Pella. Later they moved to Perkins. In April, 1891, he was married to Lucy De Vries at Orange City, and they made their home at Perkins. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1941. They moved to Rock Valley several years ago, and have made their home here since. Two weeks ago Mr. Van't Hul became ill and was taken to Pine Rest.

Surviving are his wife and seven children: Herman, John, Gerrit, Jessie (Mrs. Bert Van Maanen), Otto and Bert, all of Rock Valley, and Gerb of Hull. There are also thirty-two grand children, and ten great grandchildren. His six sons acted as pall bearers at the funeral. Dr. Herman Kuiper officiated.

Similar obituaries were published in the Rock Valley Bee (May 25) and the Alton Democrat (June 7). They give the same information, and the Rock Valley Bee obit refers to him as "beloved husband and father."

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Bert Vant Hul, born 1872, died 1945, spouse Lucy, buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Although all of his obituaries and the cemetery index call him "Bert," subsequent newspaper announcements of the reading of his will and appointment of an estate executrix persistently call him "Bart," as does his wife's obituary (Sioux Center News, Jan. 4, 1951, and other local newspapers).
