Sept. 12, 1918--May 3, 2006

SHELDON--Elizabeth "Betty" Martha Van Veldhuizen, 87, Sanborn, died Wednesday, May 3, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services were Saturday, May 6, at First Reformed Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hegstad officiating. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Betty Van Veldhuizen, daughter of Cornelius and Pauline (Intveld) Punt, was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Maurice. She grew up in rural Maurice and attended the area country school there. She married Henry J. Van Veldhuizen on her 26th birthday, Sept. 12, 1944, at her parents' home near Maurice. They spent the early years of their marriage in the Sioux County area, moving to Sanborn in 1956. Family was important to them and they were blessed with five children. Mr. Van Veldhuizen died Feb. 14, 1993.

During their years in Sanborn, "Mrs. Betty" was a longtime cook at Sanborn Public School. She taught 3-year-olds' Sunday School at First Reformed Church in Sanborn for many years, as well as catechism and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of First Reformed Church's RCWM and Bible Study Circle, and the American Legion and Prairie View Auxiliaries. She continued cooking Sunday dinners for many of her children and grandchildren until she moved to Prairie View Manor in 1999. Due to her failing health, she moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in 2004.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, cooking and crocheting. She made more than 50 afghans for her family and for others. She collected bears and other stuffed animals. A strong faith was especially important to her and her joyful spirit will be missed by many.
