Hawarden Independent, December 29, 1938

John W. Ervin, a former resident of this vicinity, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. M. Royalty, at Humboldt, SD, at 8 o'clock Saturday evening following a lingering illness. He had been cared for at a hospital at Madison, SD for a time but when it was ascertained that his ailment was incurable he was returned to the home of his daughter where death claimed him.

Funeral services were held at the Royalty home at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning with the minister of the Congregational church of Humboldt in charge. His remains were then brought to Hawarden and funeral services were held at the Methodist church with the same minister in charge, Rev. R. F. Chapler, pastor of the local Methodist church, sang two selections. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery.

John W. Ervin was born at Clinton, Ill., Aug. 22, 1869, so was past 69 years of age. Later he moved to Minnesota and was married at Fairmont where he lived for a time. The family then came to the vicinity of Elk Point where they lived on a farm and later they moved onto a farm northwest of Hawarden and he lived in this vicinity until 15 years ago when he went to Humboldt. SD and since that time Mr. & Mrs. Ervin lived with their daughter. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Royalty and Mrs. Wm. Kahl of Colman, SD, and one son, John H. Ervin of Akron. He also leaves two brothers and seven grandchildren. One brother, Frank Ervin was here for the funeral. Others who accompanied the body here were his wife and Mr. & Mrs. Royalty and Mr. & Mrs. Wm.Kahl.
