Hawarden Independent, August 23, 1945

Mrs. John Ervin, a former resident of this vicinity, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dan Royalty at Humboldt, SD, at 11 o'clock last Thursday night. While Mrs. Ervin had been in failing health for some time, her last illness was but six days.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Humboldt, Sunday morning with Rev. E. W. Canfield officiating. Her remains were then brought to Hawarden and services were held at the Methodist church, with Rev. Canfield again in charge. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery.

Sofia Nilson was born on March 4, 1867 near Bastile, Sweden. She was united in marriage with John W. Ervin at Cedarville, Minn., on December 25, 1891. To this union four children were born, one of whom passed away in infancy. She and her husband came to Union county 52 years ago and at one time she resided northwest of Hawarden. For many years she lived at Humboldt. She is survived by three children, John H. Ervin and Mrs. Wm. Kahl of Hawarden and Mrs. Royalty of Humboldt.

Oscar Swanson of Inwood, Mr. & Mrs. Dan Royalty of Humboldt and Manden Lansdowne, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Smith and Delia Waterbury of Akron.
