Kenneth Van Wechel Succumbs After Long Illness

Funeral services for Kenneth L. Van Wechel, 55, former Orange City merchant, were held Tuesday at the American Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Alvin Hook officiating.
Mr. Van Wechel died Sunday morning at the Orange City Municipal Hospital after an illness of six years with a heart condition.

He was born February 24, 1911, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Van Wechel. On September 2, 1937, he married Gwen Den Beste.
He worked for Mr. John R. Eerkes at the Pure Foods Grocery until 1943, when he entered the service, returning in 1945. He opened the Self Serve Grocery in 1946 and operated it for 14 years, retiring in 1960 due to ill health.

Survivors are the widow; two sons, David of Orange City and Paul at home; one daughter, Mary, Mrs. Arlon Sandbulte of Sioux Center; six grandsons; five brothers, Clarence and Melvin of Grinnell, Raymond and Verlyn of Vinton and Lloyd of Orange City; three sisters, Helen of Orange City, Mrs. Earl Lindquist of Ida Grove and Mrs. Floyd Postma of Grinnell.

Pallbearers were Russell Vande Brake, Ray Wielenga, Nelson Muilenburg, Vernon Schoep, Willis Meylink and William H. Kosters.
Military ceremony was held at the Westlawn Cemetery by members of the Pressman-Kosters Post #329, American Legion.
Burial was made in the Westlawn Cemetery with the Van Etten Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
