Gertrude was the daughter of Tunis Ver Hoeven and Lillian (Hoeve) Ver Hoeven.
On February 19, 1920, she married Anthony H. "Tony" Van Zee at Middleburg. They farmed at Middleburg until 1944, when they moved to Hospers. In 1981, they became residents of the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. In 1985, she transferred to the Northwest Iowa Health Center Nursing Home in Sheldon. Mr. Van Zee passed away January 15, 1986, at Sheldon.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church. Survivors include her three daughters, Mrs. Artie Grotenhuis and Mrs. Peter (LaVonne) Hofmeyer, both of Hospers; and Mrs. Mae Wolfswinkel of Paradise Valley, Arizona; son, Henry J. of Artesia, Califhrnia; twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; and sister, Mrs. Gary (Cora) Mouw of Orange City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, four brothers, and a sister.
