Randall Lee Van Zee, 56, of Sheldon, IA passed into glory on Friday, April 4, 2008. He was born to Alvin and Agnes (Katje) Van Zee on December 17, 1951 in Sioux Center, 1A. He was raised in Rock Valley, IA and graduated from Hull Western Christian in 1970. He continued his education at Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work in 1974. In 1988, Randy received his Masters in Counseling from Boston University. He worked for Hope Haven, Inc. for 29 years before moving to Sheldon in 2002 where he worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Iowa.
Some of Randy’s greatest accomplishments were finishing the Race Across AMerica (RAAM) in 2004, climbing Mount Evans in Colorado in 2007 and receiving the Iowa Governor’s Excellence Award in Vocational Rehabilitation.
Randy is survived by his wife, Denise; their children, Sara and Travis Johnson of Sisseton, SD;
Steve and Holly Van Zee of Maurice, IA and Rachel and Captain Christopher Carison of
Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren, Brodie and Camryn Van Zee; Tate, Tyan and Sidney
Johnson; Rylin Carlson; his mother, Agnes (Van Zee) Damkot of Tenstrike, MN; his siblings,
Dennis and Diane Van Zee of Rock Valley, IA; Ruth Van Zee of Denver, CO; David and Gaye
Van Zee of Holland, MI; step-sister, Susan and Tom Smith; Denise’s parents, Alfred and Aletha
Mouw of Sheldon, IA and siblings, Kenneth and Harriet Mouw of Glendale, AZ; Cheryl and
Robert Van Meeteren of Sheldon, IA; Roger and Rochelle Mouw of Sheldon, IA; numerous
nieces and nephews and a lifetime of those touched by his life.
Randy was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Van Zee and step-father, Warren Damkot
