Steve Siebersma, 90, of Orange City, IA died Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Heritage House in Orange City.A private family graveside service will be held in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center with Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating.
A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11AM at the First Reformed Church of Orange City with Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating.
Steve C. Siebersma was born on September 1, 1921, to Cornie and Maggie (Scheeringa) Siebersma. Steve was fond of saying that he "was born on the Alton pavement." He grew up on a farm near Carnes, Iowa. He received his education at a nearby country school and joined the Army Air Force in 1942. He married Lois Ruth Bronkema in 1944 and she joined him at Maxwell Air Base in North Carolina and then at a base in Miami Beach, Florida.
After WWII, Steve and Lois returned to Northwest Iowa where he was a grocer at ABC stores in Orange City and Sioux Center and later pursued various other business interests. They became the parents of five children.
Steve served his community as a Legion member and fireman; participated in church, school and city organizations; and was a CASA representative for children. He also loved to sing, bowl, and go fishing.
In 1990, Steve and Lois moved to Sequim, Washington, where they owned and operated a bookstore and volunteered for the National Fish and Wildlife Service. He continued to sing in church choirs and MC’d for senior citizen groups.
Steve and Lois returned to Orange City in 2007 where they eventually resided at Landsmeer and then the Heritage House. He enjoyed helping out at the local museum and spending time with relatives and friends.
Steve is survived by his wife of 67 years; one daughter, four sons and 15 grandchildren: Pat and John Haveman of Hull (Steve, Joel, James, Pam and Lora); Stephen and Carmel of Omaha, NE (Annie, Eric and Laura); Marv and Greta of Sioux Center (Erica, Steve C. and Mike); Dan and Diane of Ft. Pierre, SD (Aaron and Kristen); and Tim and Beth of Newcastle, WA (Zan and Laine). He also leaves 24 great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by one brother and four sisters; JR and Audrey Siebersma, Hermina Muilenburg, Edna and Frank Katje all of Orange City, Sophia Van Zee of Rock Valley and Marilyn and Chet Faber of Escondio, CA; sister-in-law, Nelvy Siebersma of Phoenix AZ; brother-in-law, Elmer Hofland of Orange City and several step-brothers and step-sisters.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; two step-fathers; one brother: Stan Siebersma; two sisters: Lucille Vande Brake and Marjorie Hofland; three brothers-in-law: Rich VanZee, Elmer Vande Brake and Nels Muilenburg.
